REVIEW — ‘Got it wrong’ by Claire Martine

The cover for Claire Martine's newest single, "Got it wrong."

On April 28, Claire Martine released her newest dreamy single, “Got it wrong.”

Produced by Alejandro Flórez and Liam Hartnett, “Got it wrong” uses wistful, lo-fi-pop-adjacent beats accompanied by beautiful bass and guitar playing to describe how hard it can be to express yourself at the right times. Lyrics like, “Sorry about last night / rolled your ankle / but I’m the one who cried” encompass this idea perfectly, as Martine details how raw emotion that you’re trying to keep down can come out at the wrong times, because of suppression. These lyrics also show the guilt and embarrassment that come with these emotions appearing at the wrong times, and feeling as though you need to apologize for it.

Martine’s vocals almost float over the beat and instrumentals, with layered vocals behind them to add to the dreamy atmosphere. However, these aspects don’t take away from the message of the song itself. The smooth, pop beats are calm in the background, acting as a stage for the lyrics that Martine pieced together. Between the instrumentals and the lyricism, the overall vibe of “Got it wrong” does a great job at reflecting Martine’s musical inspirations, like Immunity-period Clairo with songs such as “Bags” and “Closer To You,” especially when it comes to lyricism and softer instrumentals that still carry a beat.

Martine released “Got it wrong” ahead of her EP, Better safe than sorry, releasing June 23 of this year. This is the second single, following the EP title track “Better safe than sorry.” These two singles show Martine’s musical vision for herself, which she has finally put together: they sound harmonious back-to-back, in terms of sound, but manage to stand out on their own at the same time.

Martine continues to create music that is authentically her. From the slow, pop beats to exploring emotions that we have all struggled with, Martine embodies the difficult moments of trying to express ourselves and our deeper feelings.
