In conversation with Ren Genevieve: everything she never said

When Ren Genevieve was working on her debut single for her upcoming EP, Everything I Never Said, one motto kept repeating in her head: “If you think this song is about you, it probably is.” That sentiment became the backbone of the project’s lead single and namesake, “Everything I Never Said,” released on January 16.

“For me, songwriting is sometimes a moment to say something I might not actually say to someone,” Genevieve explained. “It can be a bit more bold or tongue-in-cheek than what I’d say to someone’s face.” Since Genevieve was young, she had used singing and songwriting as a form of therapy. “My parents joke that I came out of the womb singing,” she said.

From musical theatre to her church’s choir, Genevieve inserted herself into any musical scene she could find. As she got older, she began to write her own songs and produce them in the comfort of her own room.

What began as bedroom demos grew into full-fledged self-production, and before this new project, Genevieve had already produced four songs entirely on her own, proving her instincts extended beyond songwriting and into sound design.

“I feel like music is a way to understand the world around me a lot better and understand the different things I or other people in my life have experienced. I think it can kind of give voice to different feelings and situations and memorialize them in a way that is really unique and special,” she said.

The inspirations for Genevieve’s music stem from Ariana Grande to Joni Mitchell, but the main inspiration is the city around her. “New York [City] is so special,” she said. “It’s so vibrant. You can go outside at 2:00 in the morning, and there are people, there is life, and there are so many different micro lives happening out there around you. I just find all the energy around that inspiring.”

That same restless, electric energy that pulses through New York City also finds its way into her latest single. Wanting a sound that felt just as expansive as the city that inspires her, Genevieve brought the track to life alongside Joshua Monroy, marking her first collaboration with a notable industry name.

“We recorded at Studio 1 Zero in Atlanta, Georgia. Every day we recorded one song, and there are six songs on the EP,” she recalled. “It was so fun to be in a studio space where I could just focus on the singing and the writing — I wasn’t having to be the technician, too. It was also really exciting to hear how someone else interpreted my writing, and how they were inspired to introduce different sounds and things like that.”

At its core, Everything I Never Said is about honesty and vulnerability, something Genevieve hopes audiences can relate to. “I really enjoy that moment of connection where I may have experienced this one thing that feels really special to me, but it is actually universal. Someone listening to my song in Australia can be like, ‘Wow, I feel that exact same way.’”

By pairing her most candid lyrics yet with a more expansive production style, Genevieve leans fully into that vulnerability, something she admits is a little different than her previous sound.

“[Everything I Never Said] is definitely going to be a little bit different than the other singles I have released. It will be a good departure [from my previous singles], while still living in the same kind of space,” Genevieve said.

With the EP’s second single, “Museum,” set for release on March 13, Ren Genevieve is ready to reveal yet another layer of her artistry.

“I hope that people get to see another side of my music,” she confessed. “This EP definitely has a heavy pop influence, and I hope people still get to hear that while also hearing that lyrical through-line. I also hope that people can see themselves in the songs and see their experiences, and hopefully feel like they are reflected in that storytelling, as well.”
